Wells Fargo Named as an ICON Preferred Home Mortgage Lender, Offering Incentives to Buyers of 3D-printed Homes
ICON, the global leader of construction-scale robotics, has announced that Wells Fargo, one of the nation's largest bank mortgage lenders, has become an ICON preferred home mortgage lender, as first reported by CNBC. As part of the collaboration, Wells Fargo will offer a 50-basis point lender credit to qualified buyers of ICON homes who obtain their financing through Wells Fargo Home Mortgage.
The announcement marks a significant milestone for the robotic construction housing market. Wells Fargo's commitment as an ICON preferred lender signals institutional confidence in 3D-printed construction as a proven, market-ready building method and removes one of the most significant barriers to consumer adoption. "Having one of the nation's leading banking institutions make such a strong and pointed commitment helps people understand that this technology, and the houses it produces, are ready for primetime," said Jason Ballard, Co-Founder and CEO of ICON.
Wells Fargo Home Lending has dedicated teams across the country focused on new construction lending, delivering a seamless customer experience through specialized sales and fulfillment support.
"We think the technology that ICON has built has the potential to lower construction costs and to speed up homebuilding at a time when we are seeing broader challenges in housing affordability and access to homeownership," said Serhat Oztop, Head of Home Lending at Wells Fargo. "The housing market is looking for new ways to increase supply and improve affordability, and 3D-printing technology is now proven enough to do both at scale."
The Wells Fargo and ICON relationship began in 2019, when Wells Fargo Technology Banking began discussions with ICON around payments automation and capital markets. The mutually shared values around driving innovation for home ownership and sustainability became the common thread that grew the relationship. The conversations quickly expanded, including introducing ICON to Wells Fargo Foundation, which teamed up with ICON to support Initiative 99, a global architecture competition focused on designing high-quality homes that could be built for $99,000 or less using 3D-printing technology. As part of that effort, Wells Fargo provided a $500,000 grant to help bring winning Initiative 99 designs to life at Mobile Loaves & Fishes' Community First! Village in Austin, Texas, advancing solutions for the chronically homeless while demonstrating the cost and waste reduction potential of robotic construction.
That early philanthropic collaboration established Wells Fargo as one of the first major financial institutions to support alternative construction methods and positioned ICON's technology as a viable model for addressing the housing affordability crisis. Today, the partnership has expanded well beyond philanthropy into market-making mortgage innovation, recognizing that 3D-printed homes cannot scale without lenders willing to finance them.
ICON's first completed residential community, built with Lennar in Texas, sold quickly with Lennar's own mortgage arm handling all financing. The Wells Fargo partnership now opens access to one of the nation's largest bank mortgage lenders for buyers across ICON's growing portfolio of residential projects, which span Central Texas communities including Wolf Ranch in Georgetown, Mueller in Austin, and Wimberley Springs in the Texas Hill Country.
The 50-basis point lender credit provides meaningful savings for qualified buyers. On a $400,000 home loan, the credit equates to approximately $2,000 in upfront savings at a time when housing affordability remains a critical challenge nationwide. As ICON expands its capabilities and its network of builders deploying the Titan robotic construction system, Wells Fargo will continue to have a visible presence across ICON's home-lending efforts helping establish credibility for 3D-printed homes within the broader housing and mortgage ecosystem.
