Element Design and Application Engineer II

ICON is seeking an Element Design and Application Engineer to lead the development of digital design assets and tools used to design with ICON’s next generation design-to-print design platform, Codex. This role serves as the primary technical liason between Building and Construction Science team and Software teams to establish the digital architecture that translates building designs from industry-standard design tools into ICON's technology environment to support the design, printing, and construction of 3D printed buildings. In this role, you will be responsible for development of the foundational component library, parametric-design framework and integration systems that form the core components of the Codex Platform. Working closely with our Software team, you will develop digital design components and integration systems that enable seamless translation from architectural design to 3D printed construction. This position requires expertise in both construction science and digital design systems to transform how architectural design translates to automated construction workflows. This role is based on site at our Austin, TX HQ Campus and reports to the Senior Director of Building Performance & Regulatory.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Lead development of standardized digital design components and parametric building element libraries and define the enhanced BIM standards and data structures that enable automated design validation and construction planning for each digital design component.
  • Create and manage Revit families (or similar industry standard BIM platform elements) and BIM components that contain all necessary data for 3D printable systems and construction execution.
  • Establish component interaction rules, constraints, and dependency frameworks for seamless design-to-print workflows
  • Support the software team in providing feedback on workflows for architects and engineers working within the CODEX platform and gather feedback from internal and external users to continuously improve digital tools and processes.
  • Support training and adoption of ICON's digital design tools across ICON teams and external partners and provide troubleshooting support as needed.
  • Serve as primary technical liaison between Building+ Construction Science engineering, software, and print teams by gathering and translating technical requirements from across the departments into actionable digital component specifications.
  • Coordinate and support the validation processes for digital assets and automated design translation workflows
  • Support the development of frameworks that translate industry-standard architectural designs into ICON's technology environment
  • Establish quality assurance protocols and validation procedures for the implementation of the design elements and software.
  • Collaborate with the Software team to establish standards, protocols and data architectures to integrate design requirements into digital platforms and automated systems for design-to-construction integration.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's degree in Architecture, Architectural Engineering, or related field with strong technical focus.
  • 5+ years of experience in architectural design and construction, with demonstrated expertise in building systems and
    construction methods.
  • Advanced proficiency in Revit, AutoCAD, and other BIM software with experience creating and managing complex architectural families.
  • Strong understanding of construction and design industry practices including structural systems, architectural design, and construction sequencing.
  • Experience with productization of construction elements and translating design concepts into reproducible components.
  • Proven project management skills with ability to coordinate technical initiatives across multiple stakeholders.
  • Construction technology experience with understanding of advanced manufacturing or prefabrication methods.
  • Experience with 3D printing, robotics, or advanced manufacturing technologies in construction applications.
  • Background in construction technology development or innovation in building systems.
  • Software development experience or familiarity with database design.

ABOUT THE TEAM

Solving one of the most challenging problems humanity faces requires a level of diversity across disciplines. ICON believes that by being a non-homogenous organization, we can capture unique perspectives, educational backgrounds, and ideation. We strive to be inclusive and seek team members who share our passion for the mission within the mission: building robust and diverse teams to help us prevail in the face of our challenges.

We‘re a team of varied backgrounds, countries, and experiences, and we believe our differences make us stronger as we tackle some of the most challenging problems of our time.

MISSION-DRIVEN

Every startup wants to change the world, but we genuinely believe we’re not being hyperbolic when we say this technology has the potential to reinvent human shelter, dramatically improving quality and resiliency while driving down costs to make housing affordable for everyone. We believe in harnessing the power of construction technology for the good of all humanity, both here on Earth and off-world. And while we get excited about R&D accomplishments in the lab, we get more excited when we see our work out in the real world, printing real homes for real people.

We work hard because we know what we are doing can reshape the way we live as a species. And it doesn’t hurt that it’s super fun. Where else do you get to play with giant robots and see the results of your work manifest in beautiful full-scale buildings that didn’t exist before—and that someone can now call home?
