Director, Construction

ICON is looking to add a Director of Construction to lead all general contracting operations for ICON’s expansion into the Florida market. This position will serve as ICON’s licensed Qualifying Agent in Florida and Miami-Dade County, overseeing all construction activities conducted under the company’s general contractor license. This is a senior leadership role responsible for establishing ICON’s Florida construction division, building a high-velocity, agile construction team capable of delivering projects across residential, commercial, educational, and hospitality sectors. The ideal candidate is an experienced builder, strategist, and operator with a proven ability to deliver exceptional projects, develop strong trade networks, and navigate complex local permitting and regulatory environments. This role is based in Miami, FL and will report to the VP of Build Operations.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Build and lead ICON’s Florida construction organization, including hiring, mentoring, and developing a high-performing team of superintendents, purchasing, and field staff.
  • Establish operational standards, workflows, and field practices to ensure projects are delivered safely, efficiently, and with the highest quality.
  • Drive a culture of velocity, accountability, and adaptability, ensuring the team can execute multiple projects concurrently in a fast-moving environment.
  • Collaborate with ICON’s Design-Build, Technology, and Field Operations teams to integrate 3D-printed wall systems and innovative building methods with traditional trades.
  • Serve as ICON’s licensed Qualifying Agent for Florida construction operations, ensuring all work performed under ICON’s license complies with state and local building codes and permitting requirements.
  • Maintain active registration and good standing with the Florida Department of Business & Professional Regulation (DBPR), Construction Industry Licensing Board (CILB), and local jurisdictions such as Miami-Dade County.
  • Oversee permitting, contractor registration, insurance, and compliance documentation for all Florida projects.
  • Champion a safety-first culture across all field operations, ensuring adherence to OSHA and local construction safety standards.
  • Develop and maintain a deep network of qualified trade partners and suppliers across Florida, emphasizing reliability, safety, and craftsmanship.
  • Lead all trade engagement, bidding, and contracting efforts, ensuring ICON partners with the best subcontractors for each market segment.
  • Drive local sourcing strategies that reduce cost, increase speed, and improve quality.
  • Support trade partner training and onboarding programs to align field teams with ICON’s construction methods and standards.
  • Project Execution & Financial Performance
  • Oversee field execution and project delivery across all active and upcoming Florida projects.
  • Ensure that projects are completed on time, within budget, and in compliance with design intent and contractual obligations.
  • Review project budgets, forecasts, and cost reports in collaboration with ICON’s Finance and Project Management teams.
  • Identify opportunities to improve construction efficiency, reduce cycle times, and increase gross margin performance.
  • Implement ICON’s Quality Assurance and Quality Control systems to verify adherence to specifications, building codes, and client expectations.
  • Ensure all construction activities meet or exceed ICON’s standards for safety, quality, and performance.
  • Lead root-cause reviews and implement continuous improvement initiatives when quality or schedule deviations occur.

 

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

  • Active Florida Certified General Contractor (CGC) license in good standing.
  • 10+ years of progressive experience managing construction operations for residential and commercial projects.
  • 5+ years in a senior leadership role overseeing field teams, superintendents, or project delivery functions.
  • Deep understanding of Florida building codes, permitting processes, and regulatory environments, especially within Miami-Dade and South Florida jurisdictions.
  • Proven experience building and leading high-velocity construction teams capable of delivering multiple concurrent projects.
  • Established network of qualified trade partners and proven ability to recruit and develop new trade relationships.
  • Strong knowledge of construction cost control, scheduling, and quality management best practices.
  • Excellent communication, leadership, and team-building skills.
  • Proficiency with construction management platforms such as Procore, Smartsheets, or equivalent.
  • Ability to travel throughout Florida for site visits and trade partner development.
