Associate Building Designer

As part of a small, passionate, and accomplished team, you will support the design, development, and delivery of high-performance wall systems, enclosures, and buildings using ICON’s 3D printing technology. This role is ideal for someone with a strong foundation in architectural design who is eager to contribute to innovative building systems and learn in a fast-paced, collaborative environment. You’ll work on projects that advance the future of affordable, resilient, and sustainable shelter. This role is based in Austin, TX, and will report to the Senior Director of Building Design. 

 

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Support the development of ICON’s 3D-printed wall systems with a focus on occupant comfort, sustainability, and performance.
  • Assist in the creation of construction documents, wall assembly drawings, and building envelope details, including window and door systems, waterproofing, and weatherization.
  • Help produce diagrams that communicate construction sequencing for building system integration (mechanical, electrical, plumbing).
  • Collaborate with architects, engineers, and researchers to support design strategies for weatherization, resiliency, and thermal performance.
  • Participate in design explorations of new wall profiles and configurations for future projects.
  • Contribute to the organization of drawing templates, detail libraries, and wall system catalogs for varying climate zones.
  • Produce drawings and documentation to support research, development, and field implementation efforts.
  • Coordinate with internal teams (software, construction, and printing) to support successful project execution.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Degree in Architecture or a related field from an accredited institution.
  • Familiarity with design tools such as Revit, Rhino, AutoCAD, Google Suite, and Adobe Creative Suite.
  • Understanding of architectural drawing sets and building systems.
  • Strong interest in sustainability, innovation, and emerging building technologies.
  • Ability to work in a collaborative, iterative environment and communicate ideas visually and verbally.
  • Portfolio or work samples demonstrating design and technical documentation capabilities.

 

PREFERRED SKILLS

  • Experience with both residential and commercial design projects (academic or internship experience welcome).
  • Proficiency in rendering tools (e.g., Enscape) is a plus.
  • Strong organization and time management skills.
  • Self-motivated and eager to learn new tools and processes.
