Materials Engineer II, Strategic R&D

ICON seeks a Materials Engineer II on the Strategic R&D team who will lead and contribute to the development of the next generation of printable cementitious and non-cementitious products that will focus on higher-performance composites, smart-sensing, durability, and cold weather applications. As Materials Engineer II, you will provide inputs to build the product roadmap and portfolio, develop and execute testing protocols and experimental setup to bring ideas into printable products, create standards for testing, application, and quality control, and support R&D efforts to optimize existing formulations. This role will report directly to the Director of DOD R&D at our Austin, TX office.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Lead the development of new 3D-printable cementitious and non-cementitious materials targeting new developments in high-strength concrete, high-performance and fiber-reinforced concrete, and binary and ternary mortar and concrete mixtures.
  • Design and execute testing programs focused on evaluation of local material, performance assessment, and optimization of 3D-printed materials and structures, developing a project and company-specific quality control program.
  • Optimize current proprietary CarbonX proportions to improve its performance and durability while lowering its embodied carbon footprint.
  • Perform data analysis and elaborate technical reports as a result of the testing and deployment of 3D-printed technologies and materials.
  • Perform benchmark studies to identify new stakeholders, sources, and technologies that help execute testing protocols, and promote a breakthrough innovation strategy as well as the development of more sustainable solutions.
  • Provide support and training to company members such as junior engineers, peers, and laboratory personnel.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • M.Sc. in Civil Engineering with focus on cement-based materials, and concrete.
  • Proven advanced knowledge of concrete, cement-based materials, and/or alternative binders.
  • Experience in evaluation and product certification following ASTM and ACI standards.
  • Understanding of structural engineering, construction systems, concrete-related codes, regulations, and specifications (ACI 301,ACI 318, ACI 33, International Code Council's Evaluation Service (ICC-ES) AC509 for Concrete 3D-printed walls).
  • Experience in the development, optimization, and performance troubleshooting of concrete mixtures and/or other cement-based products.

 

PREFERRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:

  • 7+ years of advanced knowledge in cementitious materials and concrete technology.
  • Experience in the development of concrete products tailored to user-centered applications, among these: high early strength concrete, fiber-reinforced concrete, and high-performance concrete.
  • Advanced knowledge in fiber-reinforced concrete, paste/mortar/concrete rheology, supplementary cementitious materials, and alternative binders.
  • Experience with ready-mix concrete and dry-bagged concrete and mortar mixes, sourcing, testing, development, manufacturing, and application.
