BIM Technologist II

ICON is seeking a BIM Technologist II to join our Architecture and Building Performance department as part of the Design Technology team. The role will be to work closely with ICON’s design technologists, construction architects, MEP engineers, structural engineers, and project Architect of Record to deliver tools and templates to streamline project delivery. This role reports to the Director of Architectural Technology. The role will also provide support in researching and evaluating technologies and systems to create high-performance and sustainable 3D-printed buildings.

As part of a small, passionate, accomplished team, you will develop the processes, workflows, and designs to deliver leading MEP systems integrated with printed wall systems, enclosures, and buildings using ICON’s technology set. As an ICONIC, you will be an industry leader and direct contributor to the development of entirely novel approaches to high-performance buildings and you will have the opportunity to work with your team to advance humankind’s ability to provide dignified, affordable, resilient, and sustainable shelter to the world. This role is based on ICON’s Austin, TX campus and reports to the Director, Architectural Technology.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Develop file-to-factory parametric workflows between 4D BIM modeling environments and control systems for robotic prototyping.
  • Collaborate with ICON’s software team and implement rapidly developing internal software and workflows into project delivery in multiple disciplines, including architecture, MEP & structure.
  • Prepare automated workflows and create tools that bridge between BIM ecosystem to other software for user productivity, model coordination, documentation, manufacturing, analysis, data enrichment, rendering, and animation - particularly with Rhino, Grasshopper, Dynamo, Google API, and other Autodesk products.
  • Support the development of Revit templates and families library in close collaboration with Construction Architects, MEP engineers and structural engineers within the Architecture & Building Performance department.
  • Support the documentation and design delivery for architectural, structural, mechanical, electrical, and plumbing designs for light commercial and residential projects across the US.
  • Support shop drawing productions for a limited scope of projects. Develop tools to automate the process.
  • Support the lifecycle management of BIM models, including maintenance of referenced models, BIM file management, and file transfer protocols, to allow simultaneous production by a large multi-person team without loss of productivity.
  • Participate in company-wide digital workflow-related R&D work to streamline workflow from design to print.
  • Stay abreast in new and emerging technologies and best practices impacting digital design to enhance productivity and efficiency as well as profits.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Architecture, Engineering, or a Construction-related discipline. Masters degree preferred.
  • 5+ years of experience producing and coordinating Building Information Models in the Architectural, Engineering, and Construction industries in a multidisciplinary environment through all design phases.
  • In-depth knowledge of Revit, including complex family creation, schedules, parameter management, template management, model management, administration protocols, and model maintenance.
  • Proficiency in Autodesk BIM ecosystem, such as Autodesk Construction Cloud, and Navisworks.
  • Proficiency in other digital design tools like Dynamo, Rhino, Grasshopper, AutoCAD, and Adobe Creative Suites.
  • Experience in structural and MEP element modeling.
  • Desire to work with a highly collaborative team on a quickly evolving product and in a fast-paced environment.

PREFERRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Experience in construction document management.
  • Familiarity with industry standards & codes, including International Residential (IRC) & Building Codes (IBC), ADA guidelines, Fair Housing Act (FHA), principles of concrete design & construction, construction specifications, and test methods and standards associated with the testing of building envelope systems (AAMA/ASTM).

ABOUT THE TEAM

Solving one of the most challenging problems humanity faces requires a level of diversity across disciplines. ICON believes that by being a non-homogenous organization, we can capture unique perspectives, educational backgrounds, and ideation. We strive to be inclusive and seek team members who share our passion for the mission within the mission: building robust and diverse teams to help us prevail in the face of our challenges.

We‘re a team of varied backgrounds, countries, and experiences, and we believe our differences make us stronger as we tackle some of the most challenging problems of our time.

MISSION-DRIVEN

Every startup wants to change the world, but we genuinely believe we’re not being hyperbolic when we say this technology has the potential to reinvent human shelter, dramatically improving quality and resiliency while driving down costs to make housing affordable for everyone. We believe in harnessing the power of construction technology for the good of all humanity, both here on Earth and off-world. And while we get excited about R&D accomplishments in the lab, we get more excited when we see our work out in the real world, printing real homes for real people.

We work hard because we know what we are doing can reshape the way we live as a species. And it doesn’t hurt that it’s super fun. Where else do you get to play with giant robots and see the results of your work manifest in beautiful full-scale buildings that didn’t exist before—and that someone can now call home?
