Director, Dynamic Motion Systems

ICON is looking for a Director of Dynamic Motion Systems to join ICON’s growing team. As the Director of Dynamic Motion Systems at ICON, you will be responsible for building a team of engineers to further develop Model-based control system design of dynamic systems at ICON. The leader hired for this role will be charged with building and managing a team of hardware and software engineers, as well as being accountable as a subject matter expert and an individual contributor while building a team around the skillset. This role is based at ICON’s Austin, TX campus and will report to the VP of Strategic R&D on ICON’s Olympus team.



  • Build and lead a team of mechanical and software engineers responsible for designing real-time dynamic motion control systems for large format 3d printers, including heavy lift, long reach, and multi-story capabilities.
  • Accountable for the control systems design and mechatronic system for the entire lifecycle of a field-ready large format printing product.
  • Specify control system workflows for models based controls design of motion systems including simulation and real-world control of motors, gear sets, hydraulics, fluid, power systems, and other mechatronic solutions for precision time-sensitive motion control.
  • Choose the technical direction of the team to satisfy system performance and machine dynamics requirements.
  • Report team progress at weekly, quarterly, and yearly cadence to the VP of Strategic R&D.




  • Masters degree in control systems engineering (or similar) with 6+ years of industry experience, or undergraduate degrees in software or controls engineering (or similar) with 8+ years of experience.
  • Experience managing teams of engineers for on-time product delivery.



  • PhD in control systems or hardware-oriented computer science with industry experience, or another closely related field is recommended.a
